Lotus Notes is a *brilliant* CMS, Sorry if you use IE 6-7, welcome to my new blog layout

Tables have been the great leveller when it comes to web site layout.  Until today, this blog used Tables to maintain it's major layout components, which meant that most web browsers back to Mozilla 3 and Internet Explorer 6 could view the content using the layout I intended.  Now the tables have gone so I can take advantage of 'modern' web site layout techniques, features and options.  Which means for Internet Explorer 6 and 7 users, you're probably not experiencing this blog in the manner I intended.

Sorry IE 6/7 users.  I'm not going to do anything about that.  A straw poll yesterday among my social friends indicated that I should spend my time doing something more productive than attempting to make my blog look sort-of OK in an outdated browser that didn't bother following internet standards anyway.  I agree with them.

There's even a funny story about an Australian online retailer yesterday that is imposing a tax on IE7 users:

Kogan Imposing Tax On Shoppers Who Use IE7 (via
@lif_au) http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/06/kogan-imposing-tax-on-shoppers-who-use-ie7/

So if you're on IE 6/7 do yourself a favour and use a decent browser that complies with internet standards and the latest developments, I would suggest you take a look at Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

For everyone else, since Lotus Notes is an outstanding Content Management System (CMS), everything I've written in the last couple of years is in exactly the same place, any bookmarks or links still work, the only thing that's different is the 'wrapper' around the content.

That's what I love about Lotus Notes, it's so easy to change the look and feel of any application, either through a browser, or within a Lotus Notes client, without touching the Data.  That's something that users of other software applications often have trouble with.  Yes, Lotus Notes can change the interface or upgrade to a new version, without touching the data!

So inspired by IBM's OneUI, I've made some changes.  Welcome to my new blog design :-)

Nice! Not sure if this site is optimized for mobile access!! *Wonder if I will get a mail notification, in case you answer me here, since its most unlikely I come back to this to check comments*

@8 - I can't see the problem in regards to mobile _access_. A quick test shows it worked fine on iPhone4, iPhone3GS, HTC Desire HD, Nokia E72.

Optimized for _display_ on mobile devices ... that's another thing, but with the increase in big-screen smartphones and tablet devices, and 3G, 4G, LTE speeds, not all sites need to be optimized.

Lotus Notes/Domino is capable of outputting some quite decent HTML, and considering the amount of images on matnewman.com, it loads quite fast.

I don't know if Mat has enabled the blog for mail notifications, but it sure is possible in Lotus Notes/Domino. Actuallty, it's easy, simple, quick, built-in, core functionality.

Now there's an answer to your comment, and you'll find out. :-)
