REVEALED: IBM Lotus Traveler’s NEW client for Android TABLET

Mat Newman  April 17 2012 06:20:23
During the AusLUG 2012 keynote address, Ed Brill was kind enough to lift the covers on my NDA and allow me to demonstrate the upcoming IBM Lotus Traveler client for Android Tablet to attendees.  Ed has also recently extended this offer to enable me to blog about the upcoming release.  The new client will be available with the 8.5.4 release of IBM Lotus Traveler coming later this year.

First impressions: WOW!  The new IBM Lotus Traveler client for Android is a complete departure from the current release, which is actually the same client available to Android Smartphones.  The new client takes full advantage of the extra screen real estate on the Android Tablet, has more features, and additional options for both Mail and Calendar.

As a heavy calendar user, I am particularly impressed with the new Agenda and Month views, especially when selecting a date in the month view where a pop-up appears allowing one to scroll through the details on that day without having to switch back to a day view for the information.  Being able to create meetings and invite participants easily using the completely redesigned calendar form is also quick and painless.

Demo time: here are the screen-shots!

I'm really looking forward to this release becoming publically available.  Great work IBM!

Edit: I've been using this version for a few weeks now on my Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet and am really happy with the client from a Mail, Calendar and Contacts perspective.  For an early beta everything has been running flawlessly.  For those who have followed this post through twitter, I remind you that these are screen-shots of a beta version that is NOT currently available to the general public, and will be released later this year with the 8.5.4 version of Traveler.

Wow! That's really nice - I really like that month view with the single day popup. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Thanks for the sneak peek Mat (and Ed).

Looks great.

Wonder if there'll be an option to check for free time before accepting calendar invitation.

Very very nice!

The design/ui of the traveler client for android can (imho) replace both the design of iNotes and the notes client mail-template. That would be something! :)

Is there any print option available for email printing in version 8.5.4, because 8.5.3 have no pemail printing option.

Just upgraded, and I really like everything about this new version EXCEPT the "mail: select multiple messages" view. Is there a way to turn off the preview window so you only see the list of messages but not the preview on the right side of the screen?

@11, Jon: I'm not aware of any preference that changes the selection display style.

@12, Jagger: The Traveler client for Android tablet is actually part of the 8.5.3 Upgrade pack 1 release that came out a few months ago.

I have an Galaxy Note 2 and which I could get the tablet view. I'm shocked and disappointed that there is no way to turn on a toolbar to always be visible. It's particularly frustrating if you pull up the menu and do a search--after which you can't even manually pull up the menu to do things like delete email. I sure wish they'd support the built-in mail and calendar apps like the do on iPhone. I have more confidence in Google or Apple making a usable mobile interface than Lotus. Very disappointed.

MarvinK: you can easily use the built-in apps on Android, just like you can on IOS. When adding account on Android, simply select Exchange ActiveSync and enter your Traveler Server's settings.

Is there a way to view email full screen? Difficult to read when on portrait mode using a small tablet like the Tab S.

Like Jay, I can't figure out how to hide the message list so I can read the selected message on the full page. I'm pretty sharp, but apparently need some help here. List takes 2/3 of the window in 10" tablet, but I love everything else.
