A colleague asked me earlier this afternoon to capture the AWESOMENESS that is IBM Notes in a single screen. Hmmmm ... thinks I! ... How does one explain just how good IBM Notes is in a single screen-capture?

A few screen-shots, some slicing and dicing, and a couple of overlays later ... I think I've gotten a lot of it covered:

Clearly, this is worthy of an entire #UserBLAST session to explain exactly what is happening within that one screen-shot!

Many will look at this screen and wonder exactly what is going on, and why I'm so excited to talk about one picture of a software application for an entire hour?

Thankfully, I've been invited to participate in an upcoming community call, so I'm pretty sure that I can do the entire call based around that image and explain just how (using what is now company vernacular) freaking GREAT this one piece of software with a 25 year heritage really is!

Oh, and you might notice, there isn't a single piece of Redmond technology anywhere in this image. I haven't had to suffer from that hell for a number of years now. If you're wondering why you still are, clearly it's time we had a chat?

Y'know Mat, for what it's worth, I don't think anyone doubts the robust feature set that Notes brings to the table. Most people I know that are disappointed or frustrated with the client complain about the sheer, maddening complexity of it.

And I think your single image captures that experience very well.

@2, Nathan: You are most undeniably correct. In a world of "apps" where one only has a single button to press (eg: I "touch" REPLY so I can get the FORWARD option!!??) how does one pack over 2000 features into an "intuitive" user interface?

Personally, I can't wait to get back to my computer to do what I need to do to #GetThingsDone. The corollary, others like the one-tap simplicity and (what I term) restrictive interface, otherwise "Smart" devices would now not be prevalent.

Remember Dave from Foo Fighters "Walk" looking for options ... well, I guess I'm an options guy. give me options over restrictions ANY day!.

Such a shame they've put it on ice. It is just sooo much more than email !!

@5, Robert: Some Connections capabilities (Profiles, Microbloging/Status, Expertise Location, Files) are included as an entitlement with an IBM Notes CAL. It depends on the size of the implementation as to the server requirements for Connections. Short answer, no, it shouldn't be installed on the same box as Domino.

@7, Adam: Yes, Symphony was a fantastic inclusion. Donating all that code back to OpenOffice was a good move, although it did mean less integration with core Notes functionality. As for being "on ice", we have a major feature release coming out later this year, a lot of those features were mentioned in "Ask the Developers" and check the roadmap slides from IBM ConnectED for more details.

@Mat: My understanding was that 9.0.2 was more about features on the Domino server than on the client side (Outloook support for instance). Will there be any updates on the client as well?

Too bad they don't upgrade the Java framework in the client. It's ooooold!

@Hogne I think it would be the biggest surprise i ever had, if IBM will upgrade the Java/Eclipse framework in the Notes client. Maybe they will upgrade the JDK to a newer version, but i really do not think they will upgrade the Eclipse framwork, because that will be very difficult. Eclipse is more a complete new framework than an upgrade to the existing one in Eclipse 3.x.

Can you fire up Designer and Admin too? If so, I would absolutely love to read how you enabled that so I can try that for myself!

@Lars, if you want to run Designer and Admin on Linux, or OSX, give Domino4Wine.com a spin. Not perfect but a good first effort by the team at Prominic and the community

@10, Adam: LOL. I'm S&D, Ed was in Product mate, which is why information from him was always valuable as it stated actual roadmap and development news - right from the horses mouth.

@11, Hogne: Kramer's session clearly detailed the next Notes feature release is 2H 2015. While it did not mention many of the upcoming features, if you listened closely during "Ask the Developers" there were a raft of questions that received actual answers. I recall only 1 "we'll take that back" during the entire session.

@14, Lars: Yes, it's Notes on Ubuntu (which I've used exclusively as my primary OS for almost 5 years) and Admin works fantasticly well under Wine, while Designer does have a couple of issues. I wrote how to configure this HERE. @16 Andreas mentioned Domino4Wine from the guys at Prominic which I also saw at ConnectED this year, which is looking VERY close to being able to deliver a fully functional Designer experience on Linux and Mac.

Is it advisable to install the main Domino mail server, Connections, Sametime, iNotes and Traveler on one hardware but each applications are running separately on a virtual drive/image?

Mat,

I have read a number of your posts on Notes and how wonderful it is.

It's a bit amusing to me how people within IBM address the fact that most everyone who uses Notes, hates it.

Every single time the response is something to the effect of "Notes is just too complex for you to understand. It does so much more than Outlook."

The reality is that nearly every major client of Notes (American Express, PwC, etc) has either dropped Notes or is in the process of dropping it. Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that Lotus has refused to listen to what customers want for years and insists on telling the customers what they want instead.

Something to think about.

@21, J: Something I hear ... every ... single ... day! We resolve it by showing the customer what's possible and how to get there. The customers who do that instantly become "Happy Customers". Your comment about people dropping it isn't correct, BTW.
